If you take Viagra (sildenafil), you may want to talk to your doctor about the potential side effects, as one medical journal is now linking the erectile dysfunction drug to melanoma.
According to a JAMA Internal Medicine study, taking Viagra is associated with an increased risk of melanoma, researchers from the US and China have found.
The researchers based their findings on about 10 years of data from nearly 26,000 male health professionals who answered questionnaires about whether they had undergone surgery or received treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The researchers found that incidences of melanoma were increased among men taking the drug. In particular, men who had recently used sildenafil had nearly twice the risk of developing melanoma after adjusting for other risk factors.
It should be noted that the researchers did not find an increase in other forms of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Additionally, there was no significant association between erectile function and melanoma.
Is Viagra Safe?
Aside from the link in this study to skin cancer, Viagra side effects can include facial flushing, headaches, stomach pain, nasal congestion, nausea, diarrhea and color blindness. If you are experiencing any of these issues, you should contact a physician immediately.
