According to Reuters, earlier this month, a judge in West Virginia urged transvaginal mesh manufacturers to settle ongoing lawsuits with women who claim that the products have injured them, as cases have begun to pile up. The litigation is now one of the biggest mass torts in U.S. history.
“I’m going to kick it into high gear and ask that you do the same,” said United States District Court Judge Joseph Goodwin in Charleston, West Virginia, according to Reuters. The news outlet reported that Boston Scientific Corp, C.R. Bard, and Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon Inc. were present during the court proceeding.
More than 70,000 mesh lawsuits have been consolidated before Judge Goodwin, with cases continuing to be filed. The judge said it would take decades to bring all of the cases to trial if a settlement is not reached.
