According to Pscyhcentral.com, a review done by researchers suggests that antidepressant medications like SSRIs including Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, Luvox and Celexa, can increase the risk of preterm birth.
“Preterm birth is a major clinical problem throughout the world and rates have been increasing over the past two decades. At the same time, rates of antidepressant use during pregnancy have increased approximately four-fold,” lead author Krista Huybrechts, M.S., Ph.D. said according to Pscyhcentral.com.
The researchers analyzed published studies that evaluated women who took antidepressants during pregnancy and reviewed information on gestational age at birth.
“We studied 41 papers on this topic and found that the available scientific evidence is becoming clearer that antidepressant use in pregnancy is associated with preterm birth,” author Adam Urato, M.D., a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist at Tufts Medical Center and MetroWest Medical Center, told Pscyhcentral.com.
Premature birth can lead to complications including intellectual delays. Aside from premature birth, SSRIs have been linked to other injuries like cleft lip and palate, craniosynostosis, limb defects, clubfoot and anal atresia.
