As we have reported several times in our blog, Pradaxa (dabigatran) has been linked to a 33 percent higher risk for fatal health problems when compared to individuals using the blood thinner Warfarin.
Reported complications linked to Pradaxa include internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, bleeding within the kidneys, digestive track ulcers, and brain hemorrhaging.
Recently, ABC News reported on a study released last month suggesting Pradaxa manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim may have held back information that could have prevented serious bleeding complications.
According to the news outlet, researchers with the University of Ottawa’s Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) found that up to 40 percent of all deaths and serious bleeding events related to Pradaxa could be avoided by simple blood testing.
The researchers said that Boehringer Ingelheim had this information before Pradaxa was approved for usage in the U.S., but the company left it out of safety presentations with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Information provided by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) earlier this year suggested that Pradaxa use had been linked to 1,158 deaths and 12,494 injuries since 2010.
Additionally, Boehringer Ingelheim announced a $650 million settlement deal earlier this year to settle thousands of lawsuits brought on by injury victims.
