Lipitor is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor designed to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. However, there have been numerous complaints filed over the drug with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over complications like Type 2 diabetes, muscle damage and memory loss.
Due to the growing number of concerns over the product, in 2012, the FDA ordered Lipitor manufacturer Pfizer to change the label on the drug, and add a warning about increases in HbA1c and fasting serum glucose levels. According to news reports, lawsuits across the country are raising concerns over the sale of the popular statin drug. WWSB-TV, a Florida news station, reported that scrutiny is beginning to mount over the warnings associated with Lipitor.
In the southwest Florida-area, one attorney told the station that hundreds of cases have been filed nationally that will be paired down in Multi-District Litigation (MDL).
