Did you develop Type 2 diabetes while taking the cholesterol drug Lipitor?
According to Fox News, Pfizer is facing a growing wave of lawsuits by people who allege the company knew about possible serious side effects of its profitable anti-cholesterol drug. The news outlet reported that over the last five months, the number of lawsuits filed nationally has gone from nearly 60 to more almost 1,000.
Lipitor is designed to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. However, there have been numerous complaints filed over the drug with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over complications like Type 2 diabetes, muscle damage, and memory loss.
The cases filed have been consolidated in multidistrict litigation to a federal court in Charleston, South Carolina, with the first case scheduled to be tried in July 2015.
Lipitor is the best-selling prescription drug of all time, racking up sales of more than $130 billion since it went on the market in 1996. Fox News reported that more than 29 million patients in the United States have been prescribed the drug.
Diabetes has a very negative health impact. In February 2012, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered Pfizer to make a label change for Lipitor to add a warning concerning possible increases in HbA1c and fasting serum glucose levels.
