The Detroit Free Press (9/19, Zaniewski) reports that “Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette plans to announce legislation…aimed at tightening regulations of compounding pharmacies in the state hit hardest by a national fungal meningitis outbreak.”
Last September, the fungal meningitis outbreak sickened hundreds of people and killed more than 60. It was linked to contaminated steroids prepared by the New England Compounding Center, a compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts.
Joy Yearout, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Schuette, “said they are collaborating on a legislative proposal designed ‘to ensure compounding pharmacies operating in Michigan prioritize patient health, safety and welfare.’”
