Family Files Pradaxa Lawsuit After Woman Suffers Massive Hemorrhaging

According to CTVNEWS.ca, a Canadian family is suing Boehringer Ingelheim alleging her death was caused by Pradaxa.

The family claims they found Susan Garau, 61, incoherent and bleeding from her mouth after a bout with the flu. By the time she arrived at a hospital in Winnipeg, she was hemorrhaging from several parts of her body, including her mouth, intestines, and brain.

“They were draining blood from the stomach, she was bleeding from her mouth…and by that evening she slipped into a coma and was bleeding everywhere,” Ms. Garau’s daughter told CTVNEWS.ca.

Garau had been taking Pradaxa, a blood thinner used to treat a heart condition called atrial fibrillation. Several doctors told the news outlet that there is no antidote for excessive bleeding when a patient is taking Pradaxa.

“One of the challenges with Pradaxa in particular is that if someone comes to hospital and they are bleeding we really have no way of turning it off. There is no antidote to the drug and that can sometimes have significant consequences,” Dr. David Juurlink, a drug safety expert at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, told CTVNEWS.ca.

Can I File a Lawsuit If I Am Injured or My Loved One is Killed Taking Pradaxa?

Studies have shown that individuals using Pradaxa (dabigatran) have a 33 percent higher risk for fatal health risks as compared to individuals using the blood thinner Warfarin.

Pradaxa has been linked to internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, bleeding within the kidneys, digestive track ulcers, brain hemorrhaging, and death.
