Several news outlets are reporting that drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim has been accused of withholding Pradaxa safety data from regulators, and doctors are beginning to use caution when prescribing the stroke-prevention medication.
Pradaxa (dabigatran) has been linked to a 33 percent higher risk for fatal health problems when compared to individuals using the blood thinner Warfarin. Reported Pradaxa side effects include internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, bleeding within the kidneys, digestive track ulcers, brain hemorrhaging, and death.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, British medical journal BMJ said, “Boehringer Ingelheim tells Pradaxa users that they don’t need periodic blood tests to check for excessive blood thinning, even though the company’s own research showed that such monitoring would help reduce the risk of bleeding.”
Medical doctors told the Post-Gazette that they are now inclined to prescribe Warafin instead of Pradaxa. Some said they do this because there is no antidote currently available to reverse Pradaxa’s side effects. Warafin requires periodic blood testing, and dosage levels can be adjusted to meet a patient’s demands.
Can I File a Pradaxa Lawsuit?
Boehringer Ingelheim announced a $650 million settlement deal earlier this year to settle around 4,000 state and federal lawsuits over Pradaxa side effect allegations.
This spring, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) reported that since 2010, Pradaxa has resulted in 1,158 deaths and 12,494 injuries.
