West Virginia Woman Files Lipitor Type 2 Diabetes Lawsuit

According to the West Virginia Record, a woman has filed a lawsuit against drug manufacturer Pfizer after she said the cholesterol drug Lipitor led to her getting Type 2 diabetes.

The woman, Charlotte T. Kearnes, of Martinsburg, reportedly filed the lawsuit on October 28 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia. In her lawsuit, she claims that she began taking Lipitor in 2005, which led to a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis in 2009.

“As a result, for the rest of her life, Ms. Kearnes must undergo regular testing of her blood glucose levels, adhere to a restrictive diabetic diet, maintain an exercise regimen and take medication to control her diabetes,” the lawsuit says.

Kearnes said in her lawsuit that she has developed vision loss so severe that she had to have cataract surgery in both of her eyes. She said that she is also at-risk for heart disease, neuropathy and blindness.

Lipitor is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that works by preventing an enzyme in the liver from creating low-density lipids. It should be noted that Lipitor has been linked to Type 2 diabetes in women. Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered Pfizer to change the drug’s label, adding a warning that it may increase HbA1c and fasting serum glucose levels.

People who suffer from Type 2 diabetes from taking Lipitor will require extensive and expensive medical treatment. Contact our injury lawyers toll free at (888)841-9623 if you have experienced negative side effects of Lipitor. Our firm offers confidential, no obligation consultations.
