According to the Boston Business Journal (BBJ), two injury lawsuits were recently filed by kidney dialysis patients against Fresenius Medical Care North America.
The lawsuits were filed at a federal court in Massachusetts on December 16. The lawsuits allege that Fresenius knew about the dangers of its Naturalyte and Granuflo products used in dialysis treatment. Currently, there are more than 300 lawsuits pending against the company over the products.
The BBJ reported that a Fresenius study evaluating patients in 667 dialysis centers revealed that patients were six to eight times more likely to suffer sudden cardiac death if they had elevated bicarbonate levels stemming from product usage.
According to the BBJ, in one lawsuit, Rose Young claimed that Fresenius is responsible for the death of her husband, Whitney Young, Jr., who died immediately following his dialysis treatment at DaVita Forest Fair Dialysis in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2011.
In the second lawsuit, Michelle Donnell claimed that Fresenius is responsible for causing her “serious cardiac event during her dialysis treatment at Fresenius Medical Care Cockrell Hill in Dallas, Texas.”
In 2012, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I recall for Naturalyte and Granuflo products. It should be noted that many hemodialysis patients were exposed to injuries prior to the recall.
