Most recently, a Danish study found that mothers who took the drug during pregnancy were five times more likely to give birth to a child with autism.
According to AustismDailyNewsCast.com, the study tracked over 665,000 children from 1996 to 2006, of which, 5,500 were diagnosed with autism. Of those who were born with autism, 508 were born to mothers who took valproate drugs.
Keep in mind, last year the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety release saying that pregnant women should not take Depakote for the prevention of migraine headaches. The agency urged usage only as a last resort.
The Danish study comes after an April 2013 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) concluded that the use of the Depakote during pregnancy “was associated with a significantly increased risk of autism in the offspring, even after adjusting for parental psychiatric disease and epilepsy.”
